I walked into this production workshop running a very large petro-chem project severely behind scheduale. There just did not seem to be enough machine noise. I decided to measure the time spent making shavings using momentary time sampling. Of course the next question would be "if we're not making shavings then just what are we doing?" I answered that too by collecting a second data set collected by recording what each operator was doing every ten minutes for a period of 2 weeks. The result were these pretty pictures shown to the steering team. The amount of waste - jaw dropping. The reasons for it - fixable. And then they took action. On the right stuff. Together.
